Is everything alright with Consonance? I heard some rumors, and now I see that there's no date or hotel listed on the website...

    Local Filk Up for Hugo
    Hey all!

Seanan McGuire's Wicked Girls is up for the Hugo for Best Related Work. Wouldn't it be cool if it took the win?

You can still become a supporting (voting) member (or full member if you want to go) here.

    MV Sweet Tomatoes
Some of the people who go to Sweet Tomatoes from Consonance might be interested in this:

There's a new Sweet Tomatoes location about to open in Mountain View, just off ECR where 237 crosses ECR and becomes Grant Road. It's in that shopping center that has the Rite Aid (across Grant from Walgreen's).

The exterior looks pretty much complete, with COMING SOON and NOW HIRING signs but no specific dates.

    Consonance 2013
I know this year's Consonance just ended, but I was wondering when the guests for 2013 will be announced? My first Consonance was in 2010. I absolutely *loved* it, but I haven't been able to come back since - but it looks like I'll be able to go next year! *happy dance* Can't wait to see who will be there :D

    CONSONANCE 2012 Progress Report
The new year is upon us and Consonance is only 2 months away...
    1. Because of the tough economic times, we have extended the $45 pre-reg price until January 15th, 2012, so it's not too late to save $5 on your membership! Go to http://www.consonance.org for instructions.

    2. While you're at it, make your hotel reservations at the Hilton by visiting our website and following the link (or skip the frames by going here).

    3. CALL FOR CONCERTS: If you want a concert at Consonance and you did not have one last year, contact our Programming Director, Lara Ortiz de Montellano at lara.ortiz.de.montellano at comcast-dot-net and put "Consonance Concert" in the subject line.

If you have questions or comments, contact Dr. Jim at info@consonance.org.

Happy New Year, and we hope to see you at Consonance!

    Consonance Hotel?
It's getting close to the con, and the Hotel page on the Web site still says room rates "will be posted soon".

So when will this happen? I'm starting to get nervous about not having my reservation yet.

ConSonance 2011 - not expecting to make it
Due to my mother's health problems, most likely I will wind up missing the entire convention. If anyone is making recordings (whether video or just audio) and would be willing to trade for some videos of previous years, keep me in mind.

While Friday and Sunday look hopeless right now, I just MIGHT be able to squeeze in a couple of hours at the con Saturday night. So if anyone is looking to see me, check for me at the post-dinner concerts.

    Consonance 2011 - Progress Report 2
*** Forwaded from James Robinson ***

CONSONANCE IS COMING IN LESS THAN 2 MONTHS!

As always, there are 3 little things to consider:

    1. If you plan to come and want to save money, pre-register now and save $5 over the at-con membership price. Find out how easy this is to do at the Consonance web site: www.consonance.org

    2. If you plan to come and need to reserve a hotel room, we'll be at the Hilton Newark/Fremont (a GREAT hotel, just right for us) again this year. Reservations can be made from the Consonance web site: www.consonance.org

    3. If you plan to come and would like to do a concert, theme circle, performer's circle, panel or workshop, please contact our **new** Programming Director, Lara Ortiz deMontellano, as soon as possible. Lara has lots of experience running East coast cons, and she has the enthusiastic endorsement of former director Seanan McGuire, who has had to step down because of increasingly demanding writing commitments. Thanks for all the work you've put in over the years, Seanan, and thanks for suggesting such a worthy replacement!
    Contact Lara at: lara.ortiz.de.montellano@comcast.net

Looking forward to fun, friends and fantastic music on the first weekend in March!

    Chris Malme is visiting California
    Hi folk

Chris Malme here, also known to some of you as Minstrel. I am coming over to Consonance in March as an international guest, and am looking forward to seeing you all.

I'm arriving in SF a couple of days before the con, and for those days will either be staying as a houseguest with someone, or simply arriving early at the con hotel. Chris O'Halloran is kindly making arrangements for me.

What I am posting here about is after the con. I am not actually flying back to the United Kingdom until March 19, which gives me just under two weeks in California after the con. I haven't made firm plans for this yet, but what I was thinking of doing is going off somewhere other than SF for a week, and see some sights, then return to SF 4-5 days before my flight back to explore the city, and perhaps hang out with a few people.

At the moment, the favourite for my "week away" is to pop down to LA, and do Universal Studios, being a bit of a film freak. However, I don't think I need more than a few days to do that, so any other suggestions are welcome. Other places that have been suggested to me is the national parks, in particular Sequioa and the Napa Valley (yes, I know these are in opposite directions, I need to decide on one or the other).

I have budgeted for hotels and (probably) a car hire, but at the same time, am open to other suggestions - for instance if anyone is already planning to drive back to LA on the Monday (or other interesting places) and/or would like a houseguest for a couple of days.

When back in SF (March 15-19 approx), I plan to have a look around the city, and try to get out to Alcatraz; once again, if anyone has suggestions, or would like to meet up during the day or evening at any time let me know.

    Chris

Consonance thank yous! and: our CDs available at bandcamp.com!
    Hiya everyone!
We are back in Germany and I am finally getting over my jetlag (maaaan, the sleepies for several days ... NOT useful at work *shakes head and grins*). Thus, I now finally get around to posting my thank yous!

It was an AWESOME con! We had *so* much fun, and I can't thank the concomm enough for inviting us! Special mention from my side goes to Alan and Chris O for helping with hotelstuff - thanks so much! Also, Dr. James, John O and Chris O for just being super sweet to us at the con, we felt very loved :)) And, the wonderful consuite people whose name I have forgotten *hangs head in shame*! I am sorry that I never made it back to the consuite to play there ... things got a tad bit busy after Friday.
And thank you for everyone who came to our concert and listened and cheered for us - you guys were a FAB audience! I felt extremely flattered. Also - Kristoph and sound crew, hats off, you made us sound so good! Monitor speakers are my friend now :)

Which brings me to another point ... since yours truly had (stuuuupid!!!) forgotten to pack any CDs, we only had very few for sale at the con. Dr. James told me that several people had approached him and asked whether our music would be available via the Creaseys or elsewhere, and I said I'd work something out.
I have. Our CDs are now available for download sales at our brand new bandcamp.com site. (Put together in a bit of a rush, so it will be fleshed out with more comments, texts etc. in the future).
So, if you were/are interested in buying our music, you can now go to: jukaty.bandcamp.com !
If you wanted to buy from us at the con and were too late cuz we had already sold out, drop me a message here on LJ and I send you a discount code :)
The CDs are a little cheaper at bandcamp.com since it is download only (but if you download the whole album, you get the booklet as a pdf included). If you want a physical product, unfortunately, I can't offer you anything right now, but please also let me know so we know whether it is desired that I work something out with local filk dealers. (The tricky bit really is the shipment hassle from Europe to the US ...)

Please feel free to tell your friends about it, too, if you liked what you heard at the con ;-)

Thanks again for everything :) We hope to be back at some point - you west coast folks rock!

    Saturday night dynamics
The Saturday Night live circle -- as distinct from the Dead Dog (Faeries & Flyswatters) we're discussing in a separate entry -- was atypical in some ways, not that there's really a predictable pattern of things.

From the beginning, it was the only open filk circle going (to my knowledge) other than whatever they were doing in the Sin Pit.  I led a theme circle that started after the concerts.  (The schedule said 11, but both common sense and the director of programming told me that I should start it at the end of the GoH concert, which turned out to be 11:45 or so.)  It attracted on the order of 15 people, counting the ones I specifically recruited, and when we ran out of songs on the theme, everyone got up and left, mostly heading directly into the other circle as I recall.  That suited me fine -- if I was going to honor the filk tradition of springing new parodies on the victim in front of witnesses, I needed to be in the room that they were in, and if we'd segued into open filk I would have felt guity deserting it.  But I think the concom had a secret agenda of creating the nucleus of a second open filk circle in that room, in addition to the one left in the wake of the concerts.  In fact, in the past, cons have sometimes had parallel theme circles going with well-known performers leading each one, which is as close as I've seen them come to what a little lemming just described as "somehow try to persuade the name performers to divide themselves approximately evenly between rooms rather than having the bulk of them concentrated in one area or the other".  If so, it failed, even though the theme circle had had at least four people who have performed on stage.  Someone tried to restart a circle there later, but when I next passed by, there was nothing going on.

The other unusual thing -- and I consider this an unambiguously good thing -- was this:  not only did it last all night until the restaurant opened, with 11 of us going to breakfast (plus 3 of the survivors of the Sin Pit), but it really lasted as an organized circle.  More often than not, they just devolve into conversation at some point.  I didn't sense any lull at all from the time I arrived until we left at 5:58 -- and I was actively watching for any lull; I actually had over half a dozen months-old parodies, never heard before except at OVFF and by a few people at BayCon and house filks, that I would have done if things had slowed down, but it remained lively enough that I limited myself to two that "needed" to be sprung on specific people and a couple of songs by other people that I did as followers.  (Conveniently, one of the followers -- "Arthur Curry", whose second line is a quote from the song that I was following -- was also the original of one of the parodies I needed to spring on the victim-in-law, who performs the song I mashed it up with.)  It didn't seem cut-throat like Chaos can sometimes get, nor did I perceive anyone as filk-hogging, and yet the evening ended without my getting to any of my lower-priority new songs, and I didn't exactly hear the sound of anyone scraping the bottom of the barrel of their own songbooks either.

I really think it would be better to have two circles going, to increase surface area, as it were.  But it's hard to know how to achieve this.  Like they say, "Under the most rigorously controlled conditions of pressure, temperature, humidity, and other variables, the organism will do as it damn well pleases."
